The Centre for Democratic Empowerment (CDE) has called on Ghana’s parliament to reject the proposed “Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Value Bill 2021” currently lying before parliament. In a memorandum dated 24th September, 2021 and addressed to the Committee on Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, it observed that Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity has been scientifically established by renowned research scientists as an innermost immutable and inherent feelings that controls one’s sexual attraction to either a male, female or both. It is therefore imperative to note that gender identity of individuals cannot be determined by any other person apart from the individual in question. The statement cited arguments being made on the basis of Ghana being a Sovereign State and can therefore go ahead to enact its own laws without heeding to concerns of the international community as vague and untenable. More so, sponsors of the private members’ bill led by Hon. Sam George Nartey have not made any reliable and constructive arguments to push their agenda through. “The proposed legislation is in sharp contrast with existing international and regional treaties which Ghana has ratified”, the memo noted and questioned the essence of breaking diplomatic ties with powerful international bodies and nations who have contributed immensely towards our socio economic development and political transformation on the altar of an anti-homosexuality law which is only intended to brutalize the vulnerable minority sexual group within our society. The statement admonished African leaders to take a critical look at the merits of the LGBTQ issue and stop indoctrinating its citizens on unfounded cultural and religious values. The CDE urged Parliament to reject the proposed legislation in the supreme interest of Ghana. You can follow the link below for the complete memo.
